Michael Snedden Announces Retirement from Professional Cricket

Wellington seamer Michael Snedden has announced his retirement from professional cricket, bringing to a close a career defined by resilience, perseverance, and commitment to the game.

Snedden represented the Wellington Firebirds across all three formats after making his First Class debut against Canterbury at the Cello Basin Reserve during the 2019/20 season. Across his career with Wellington, the right-arm seamer claimed 86 First Class wickets, 32 List A wickets, and a further 17 in the Super Smash.

Originally from Auckland, Snedden made his List A debut for the Auckland Aces during the 2018/19 Ford Trophy before moving to Wellington, where he became a highly valued member of the Firebirds playing group.

Upon making his First Class debut, Snedden became the first fourth-generation cricketer to play First Class cricket in New Zealand. Cricket runs deeply through the Snedden family, with his father Martin, grandfather Warwick, great uncle Colin, and great grandfather Nessie all having played First Class cricket.

Standing tall with both bat and ball, Snedden’s journey to professional cricket was far from straightforward. After representing an Otago A side and a New Zealand XI in 2014/15, he suffered a serious shoulder injury that required multiple reconstructive surgeries. Through determination and hard work, he returned to the professional game and went on to carve out a successful domestic career with the Firebirds.

Snedden played 40 First Class matches for Wellington, highlighted by a best bowling performance of 5-56 against the Auckland Aces in the 2025/26 Plunket Shield season at the Basin Reserve, in what proved to be his final appearance at the ground for Wellington. He also contributed valuable lower-order runs throughout his career.

While stepping away from professional playing, Snedden will continue his connection with Cricket Wellington in his new role as Events and Membership Manager.

Firebirds Head Coach Shane Jurgensen said Snedden’s value to the group extended far beyond his performances with the ball.

“Sneds would provide the impact we needed for the team with the ball and would do whatever the team required, whether that was bowling into the wind or putting the pads on as nightwatchman,” said Jurgensen.

“He was extremely dedicated to his role and became the heartbeat of the group, always ready to provide the dressing room with a laugh or be someone players could lean on. He had a great feel for where the team was at and was a genuine connector within the environment.

“It is exciting to have him remain connected with the Firebirds and Blaze through his role at Cricket Wellington and I have no doubt he will continue to make a positive impact.”

General Manager High Performance Dave Wildash thanked Snedden for his commitment and contribution to Cricket Wellington.

“I’m looking forward to continuing to work alongside Sneds in his new role at Cricket Wellington,” said Wildash.

“He has been a hugely valued member of the Firebirds, someone who gave everything every time he stepped onto the park and always put the team first.

“We will miss the energy and competitiveness he gave to our bowling attack, as well as the humour, care, and connection he brought to the group each day.”

Snedden reflected on the support he received during his time in Wellington.

“Cricket Wellington has done so much for me throughout my career and I’ll always be incredibly grateful for the support this organisation has given me,” said Snedden.

“When I first came down to Wellington, I wasn’t owed anything, and the Firebirds were willing to give me an opportunity I had forever dreamed of. From the coaches and support staff to the players I’ve shared the changing room with, the people here backed me and helped me grow not only as a cricketer, but as a person as well.

“There has been no better way to finish my playing career than with this current group of players, coaches and support staff. I’ve made friendships and memories that will stay with me forever. I’m proud to have represented the Firebirds.”

Cricket Wellington would like to thank Michael for his significant contribution to the Firebirds and look forward to continuing to work alongside him in this next chapter.
