Batting Coach

Are you passionate about helping athletes and coaches reach their full potential? Cricket Wellington is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Batting Coach to join our high-performance team and support the development of both current and emerging talent across the men’s and women’s programs.

The Role

Reporting to the General Manager – Performance, the Batting Coach plays a key role in Cricket Wellington’s pathway and high-performance system. Acting as Firebirds assistant coach during the season and working across both male and female pathway environments during the off-season. The role is designed to provide technical and holistic coaching support to players, help drive coaching alignment across the system, and foster an inclusive, high-performance culture.

You will be responsible for delivering evidence-based coaching, contributing to the growth of emerging coaches, and supporting the personal and professional development of players. Your influence will stretch across teams and individuals—ensuring we identify and nurture the next generation of elite talent for Cricket Wellington and New Zealand Cricket.

Strategic Focus

This role directly contributes to Cricket Wellington’s strategic outcome of Delivering Cricket Wellington’s Strategic Outcome – Developing Talent for Cricket Wellington and New Zealand Cricket. Including the goals of:

  • Increase Representation in the WHITE FERNS – Develop and sustain a pipeline that ensures at least four Wellington-developed players are centrally contracted to the WHITE FERNS.

  • Increase Representation in the BLACKCAPS – Maintain and grow a high-performance system that ensures at least three Wellington-developed players are centrally contracted to the BLACKCAPS.


Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality coaching tailored to individual learning styles, development stages, and game roles.

  • Work collaboratively with head coaches and support staff to track, review, and refine player development plans.

  • Provide mentorship and feedback to emerging coaches, contributing to coaching capability across the performance pathway.

  • Monitor individual and team performance, adapting plans to support growth and competitive readiness.

  • Contribute to team development and culture across both male and female programs, fostering unity and personal accountability.

  • Support transparent and equitable selection processes, identifying players from a range of backgrounds and entry points.

  • Ensure alignment with national high-performance priorities through engagement with New Zealand Cricket and other partners.


About You

We are looking for a relationship-driven leader who thrives in a collaborative, evolving high-performance environment. You will bring:

  • Demonstrated experience in coaching within a high-performance sporting context.

  • Be proficient and accurate at side arm (>120km/hr) & throwing delivery.

  • An understanding of modern coaching methodologies and a passion for player and coach development.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on trust, empathy, and learning.

  • Curiosity and a mindset for innovation, growth, and excellence.

  • A commitment to diversity, inclusion, and holistic player well-being.

  • A NZ Performance Coaching Course (PCC) qualification or equivalent, and a tertiary qualification in sports or coaching is preferred.
