Cricket Wellington is pleased to acknowledge Ewen Chatfield’s recognition as a Life Member of New Zealand Cricket, confirmed by the NZC Board this week.
Already a proud Life Member of Cricket Wellington, Chatfield has been a significant figure in Wellington and New Zealand cricket for more than 50 years. Known for his reliability, humility, and long service to the game, his contribution is widely respected across the cricket community.
Chatfield represented New Zealand from 1975 to 1989, playing 43 Tests and 114 ODIs, and forming a well-regarded opening bowling partnership with Sir Richard Hadlee. His accuracy and consistency made him a key member of the @blackcaps throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
In Wellington, his impact extended well beyond his professional career. He continued to play for Wellington until 1990 and remained heavily involved at @naenaecricket where he played until the age of 68. Across five decades he contributed through coaching, mentoring, and supporting young and emerging players, becoming a valued member and steady presence in the local cricket community.
Earlier this year, with support from Wellington Alive, a campaign highlighted the need for Chatfield to be recognised at a national level. Cricket Wellington is pleased to see New Zealand Cricket formally acknowledge his long-standing service to the game.
We congratulate Ewen on this well-deserved honour and thank him for his significant contribution to cricket in Wellington and across Aotearoa.
