Cricket Wellington and Wellington Junior Indoor Cricket (WJIC) are pleased to announce a formal partnership that will see both organisations work together to grow indoor cricket and strengthen player development across the Wellington region.
The three-year agreement builds on an already strong working relationship and aims to expand the reach of junior indoor cricket and promote the sport as a vital part of year-round player development. Over 500 school-aged children and 400 adults currently participate in indoor cricket each week during the winter months. This partnership will ensure that indoor cricket continues to thrive while supporting Cricket Wellington’s wider goal of getting more people playing cricket more often.
The partnership covers a range of collaborative areas, including communications, programme support, and aligned development opportunities, with a shared focus on long-term player and community outcomes.
This season has already seen major success on and off the court, with Wellington winning both the Under 22 and 17-and-Under Girls National titles. A total of 82 girls played indoor cricket this season, a significant increase driven in part by recent quotes from Wellington Blaze players highlighting the benefits of indoor cricket in their development. The growth of female participation and talent development has been a standout highlight of the programme.
Robbie Kerr, from Wellington Junior Indoor Cricket, said the partnership formalises an already successful relationship that has helped drive the programme forward.
"We are really excited about formalising this partnership with Cricket Wellington. Their support to date has been invaluable, and this agreement gives us a solid foundation to continue building opportunities for young players, particularly in the female game. Indoor cricket is proving to be a critical development tool, and together we can do even more."
Todd Bryant, Chief Executive of Cricket Wellington, said the partnership is a positive step toward creating more year-round opportunities for players in the region.
“This partnership represents an exciting step forward for cricket in Wellington. Indoor cricket provides a fantastic environment for skill development, year-round participation, and engagement with players at all levels. We are proud to work alongside WJIC to grow the game and create more meaningful experiences for young cricketers in our region”
Cricket Wellington looks forward to continuing this journey with WJIC and supporting the next generation of cricket talent across all formats of the game.
