Troy Johnson Completes Otago Move

The Wellington Firebirds have confirmed the departure of Troy Johnson, who will join Otago for the 2025/26 domestic season.

A dependable middle-order batter, Johnson played 98 matches for Wellington across all formats since his debut in 2018, scoring over 2,500 runs. He was part of Firebirds sides that claimed titles in all three domestic competitions during his time in the capital.

Known as an outstanding teammate on the field as well as away from the oval, he was trusted with leadership roles both local and national, serving as Wellington’s One Day captain for three seasons and leading the Prime Minister’s XI against England in Queenstown last summer.

Beyond his batting, Johnson was widely regarded as one of the best fielders in the domestic game. His sharp reflexes produced many standout moments, including a memorable assist in the 2023/24 Super Smash that helped complete one of the most spectacular catches ever seen on live TV.

“Troy has been a key player for us over the past seven seasons,” said Firebirds Head Coach Shane Jurgensen.

“His contribution with the bat, in the field, and as a leader has been invaluable. We wish him well for his next chapter with Otago.”

Cricket Wellington wishes Troy the best as he completes his move south and have no doubt that Otago will benefit from his skill and experience.
