Gemma Sims Steps Away from Professional Cricket

Wellington Blaze batter Gemma Sims has announced she will step away from professional cricket, bringing to a close a journey that saw her represent both the Central Hinds and Wellington Blaze at domestic level.

Originally from Wairarapa, Sims made her domestic debut for the Central Hinds during the 2020/21 season before joining the Wellington Blaze ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. A right-handed batter and wicket-keeper, Sims made her HBJ Shield debut for the Blaze against the Otago Sparks at the Cello Basin Reserve in November 2023, before making her Super Smash debut against the Northern Brave at Mount Maunganui in January 2024.

Across three seasons with the Blaze, Sims became a highly valued member of the playing group, making 15 HBJ Shield appearances and nine Super Smash appearances for Wellington.

Blaze Head Coach Jonny Bassett-Graham said Sims' contribution to the team extended well beyond her performances on the field.

"Gemma has been one of the all-time great team members," said Bassett-Graham.

"She always brought to the environment an infectious work ethic and ambition to improve. She would go above and beyond to make sure all of her teammates were in a good space and getting what they needed.

"The Blaze environment and culture owes a lot to Gemma. We wish her all the best as she steps away from the game and thank her for her impact."

Sims reflected on her time in professional cricket and the experiences she has gained along the way.

"I'd like to thank everyone who has been part of my cricketing journey and supported me along the way," said Sims.

"Through cricket, I've learnt the importance of being part of a team. Surrounding yourself with people who challenge you, support you and celebrate success together. The Wellington Blaze has been a special example of that.

"Being part of the Wellington Blaze makes you feel part of something bigger, and I think anyone who has been part of this environment can relate to that feeling.

"The community, friendships, growth, challenges, celebrations and small moments shared with this group are what I'll look back on most fondly. I'm excited to watch the Blaze continue to grow and create more special moments together."
