Wet weather affects club Cricket

Monday, 23 November 2009

Inclement climatic conditions served to severely disrupt Wellington club cricket on Saturday, with just one game of the eight Premier and Senior fixtures able to be completed.

Only two games were able to start in the Premier and Senior competitions on Saturday, and the Senior game between Collegians and North City succumbed to the weather.

The completed game was the match between Naenae and Hutt District, which was reduced to 35 overs per side.

Hutt batted first and four players reached twenty for Hutt, but Naenae’s two “evergreen” players Shane Battock and Robbie Bird bowled well. Battock took 2 for 19 from seven overs and Bird 3 for 22 off 6.

Naenae lost a wicket to the fourth ball of the innings but a 10- run stand between James Watson and Ash Russell steered them to victory. Russell made 78 from 85 balls, while Watson got 42 from 84 deliveries as Naenae won with 20 balls to spare.

The win and five competition points lifted Naenae into the middle of the pack  with an outside chance of making the Premier One-Day final with two rounds to play. All other teams were awarded two points with frontrunners Eastern Suburbs all but assured of their final berth.

In the Senior competition, North City batted first against Collegians and were 120 for 7 when rain set in and the game was called off, making for a tense final fortnight of One-Day matches with four teams currently on the same points chasing two spots for the final.

Points:

Premier: Eastern Suburbs 25; Karori 21; North City 18; Hutt District 16; Naenae 13; Onslow 10; Taita 9, University 4

Senior: Points: Karori, North City, Johnsonville and Petone-Riverside 19; Wellington College 13; Upper Hutt 11, Collegians 9; Taita 6
