This month sees the reintroduction of the Junior Volunteer of the Month. This award is a recognition of the outstanding work volunteers do in our junior clubs. The volunteer could be an administrator, coach, scorer, manager or anyone who makes a valuable contribution to cricket at a junior level.
The
winner of the October award is Bill Taylor, Junior Convenor of the Johnsonville Cricket Club.
Bill has been involved with the Johnsonville CC for ten years now. He continues to be involved in the club even though his last child finished junior cricket in the 2008-09 season. On top of being the Junior Convenor, Bill is the ‘Have a Go’ programme coach, he’s noticed the major differences between older and younger children is that with younger children he spends lots of time reinforcing ideas and they run out of energy a lot quicker than the older kids.
Bill has been the Junior Convenor for seven years in total - three years then a break and now over the last four years. The start of the season is the busiest time as the Junior Convenor.
A huge part of Bill’s success has been finding sponsorship for the majority of their junior teams. He put’s that success down to a big club effort and positive relationships built up over the years. He adds that is helps greatly with funding for the club.
You may notice that in Bill’s photo, he has a black eye. This is the result of a fielding drill gone wrong, an occupational hazard of being a coach.
Bill will be rewarded with a family pass to a Wellington Firebirds HRV home game family pass.
