Easts hit lead as bowlers dominate

Pearce Cup holders Eastern Suburbs have hit the front of the Wellington club cricket Premier One-Day competition after a convincing 41-run win over Karori as ball dominated bat in all four third round games.

In a rematch of last year’s Premier three-day final, Eastern Suburbs batted first and made 171, the highest score of the day, aided by Karori sending down 39 wides. For Karori, Sunnie Chan took 4 for 30 and Jarrad Sewell 3 for 43.

But when Karori batted they collapsed from 44 for 0 to 69 for 7 as Josh Stuart (4 for 22) and Jeetan Patel (3 for17) took control to give Easts their third consecutive One-Day win and a two-point lead at the top of the standings to second placed Hutt District.

Last season’s One-Day winners Hutt District triumphed over University by 33 runs in a  low scoring encounter. Hutt made just 97 with Michael Burns (3 for 15) and Adrian Fong (3 for 18) being the best of the University bowlers. However the students could only muster 64 in reply, David Twigg taking 4 for 9 off 9.5 overs amd Matt O’Leary 3 for 18.

Naenae could only manage 69 against North City .Fraser Quarterman taking 4 for 14 and Dewayne Bowden 3 for 17. Norths knocked off the runs in 12.1 overs, losing three wickets in the process.

In the other match, Taita invited Onslow to bat and dismissed them for 105, David Houghton taking 3 for 17. Taita lost three wickets getting the runs with Cameron Merchant getting an unbeaten 36.

Senior

Runs were easier to come by in Senior competition One-Day matches.

Last season’s beaten finalists Johnsonville maintained their unbeaten run by defeating Taita by 44 runs. Johnsonville scored 222, Luke Woodcock top scoring with 40. Evergreen David Little took 4 for 42. Taita made 178 in reply with Anthony Crummy scoring 69. Woodcock took 3 for 15 from 10 movers with the ball and was assisted by Barry Rhodes 3 for 42. Johnsonville failed by one run to obtain a bonus point.

In a close finish Wellington College defeated the previously unbeaten Upper Hutt by one run. College made 217 for 7 with Chamika Gajanayake scoring an unbeaten 102 and then they dismissed Upper Hutt for 216.

Karori scored 266 against Collegians with Lee Edwards scoring 88 and Jono Sole 76. Clinton Butler capturing 4 for 48.They then dismissed Collegians for just 123, with James Hill (4 for14)and Fraser Te Aika (3 for 23) doing the damage.

North City made 269-6 against Petone-Riverside, with Nick Walters scoring 102 and Russell Pepperell 98 not out. Andrew Corliss took 3 for 33. Petone-Riverside could only muster 120 in reply with Pepperell (3 for 13) and Russell Kyne (3 for 33) the chief destroyers.

Women’s

In the Women’s competition Johnsonville made 187 for 6 with Caitlin Eves scoring 57. Natasha Narasy took 3 for 23. Hutt made 106 in reply. Sian Ruck took 4 for 7 from 9 overs and Megan Wakefield took 3 for 12.

Onslow scored 161 against Collegians, with Jess McFadyen and Amanda Cooper both getting thirties. Whetu Charteris took 4 for 36 and Rota Vinh 3 for 26. Collegians could only make 94, Laura Webster taking 3 for 24
