Fine sunny weather greeted Premier and Senior grade players for the first day of the second two day round of competition matches on Saturday.

In the Premier grade, second placed Karori were well placed to take first innings points against Hutt District. Hutt were dismissed for 186 and Karori were 167 for 3 at the end of play.

Firebird Chris Nevin scored 75 for Hutt while Sunnie Chan (4 for 57) and Lee Edwards (4 for 50) took the bowling honours. Hamish Templeton scored 58 for Karori and was helped by New Zealand U19 player Tom Blundell who is unbeaten on 47.

Current premiers Eastern Suburbs bowled North City out for 191 in their Cook Shield challenge match. Michael Martin made 59 and Neil Cameron had career best figures of 5 for 58. In reply Easts were 93 for4 at stumps.

The Hutt Valley derby between Naenae Old Boys and Taita was evenly poised. Naenae made 153, thanks to Phil Tunnicliffe scoring 64 from 84 balls. The Houghton brothers did the damage, with Dave taking 4 for 19 and Mark 3 for 32. At the close Taita were 146 for 6 with Kyle Hitchman taking 4 for 29

In the Senior grade, leaders Petone-Riverside dismissed the Taita seconds for 175. Jason Doyle scored 52 while Kevin Snell took 3 for 26. Petone-Riverside were 105 for 3 at the close of play.

Johnsonville were well placed against the Karori seconds. Luke Woodcock was playing his 100th game for Johnsonville but only managed 20 in their total of 284. Chris Leach made 78 while Scott Mudgway (87) and Sam Outtrim (32) created a new club record for the eighth wicket of 125. Nick Hearn took 4 for 70. Karori were 65 for 2 at stumps.

Collegians were in complete control of their game against Wellington College. College could only make 77 with Julian Brown 4 for 34 and Sachin Wijewarnasooriya 3 for 6 doing the damage. Collegians were 293 for 5 at the close. James Crichton (77) and Wijewarnasooriya (59) got fifties.

Upper Hutt made 255 for 8 against Norths. Daniel van der Hayden scored 106 after they had lost three quick wickets. Shane Brockelbank aided him with 51. Glenn Roach and Russell Kyne both took three wickets. Norths in reply were 68 for 5 when stumps were drawn for the evening.
