Defending Premier champions Eastern Suburbs enjoyed an innings and 118-run win over Onslow on Saturday in the first round of two-day cricket of the season, to open up a 15-point lead on the points table to second placed Karori at the Christmas break.
Easts scored 240 for 8 in reply to Onslow’s first innings 59 with Scott Golder getting an unbeaten 103 off 81 balls. With a deficit of 181, Onslow could only score 63 thanks to Easts overseas player Danny Evans taking 8 for 24.
Naenae took first innings points against bottom placed University. The students resumed at 122 for 6 and made 192. Colin Owens made 79 and Hamish Evans scored 36.
Naenae were in trouble at 61 for 5 but Shane Battock and Adam Williams added 106 for the sixth wicket. Buttock scored 75. Williams went on to score an unbeaten 151 from 176 deliveries. He was associated in a last wicket unbroken stand of 114 with Asif Mohammad who scored 34.
Hutt District made 219 against Taita, who were 114 for 5 when rain forced an abandonment.
In the game that did not start last week Karori batted for most of the day, scoring 267 for 7 against North City who were 8 for1 when rain came.
In the Senior grade Wellington Collegians got an outright win over Johnsonville. After making 98 Collegians dismissed Johnsonville for 48. Clinton Butler and Julian Brown both took five wickets.
Collegians then made 117 with Sam Outtrim taking 6 for 47. Johnsonville needed 168 to win but were dismissed for 163. Brown took 5 for 32 and Steve Fairbrother 4 for 45.
Petone-Riverside had made 208 for 9 on the first day against Wellington College and had College at 41 for 5. They finished at 72 all out, Shane Adair taking 4 for 8. College then batted the day out making 193 for 9. Luke Scully made 88 and useful contributions from Corey Larsen and Tom Gibson gave them a lead before the game finished.
Upper Hutt batted all day before rain intervened in their game against Taita. They made 268 for 9 thanks to 60 from Daniel van der Hayden and good knocks from Neil Press and Robert Kennedy. Matt Lewer took 5 for 68 off 17 overs. The second day of this game will be on 17 January.

In the women’s competition Collegians defaulted to Johnsonville, and Onslow defeated Hutt by seven wickets. Hutt made 72 of which extras were the top scorer. Amanda Cooper took 3 for 15. Onslow then made 73 for 3, with Nicola Kaiwai getting 46.
Premier and Senior club cricket resumes on 9 January with the final round of One-Day matches, ahead of the One-Day finals on 25 January.
