Michael is a tall, right-handed batter and right-arm fast medium bowler originally from Auckland. His father (Martin), grandfather (Warwick), great uncle (Colin) and great-grandfather (Nessie) all played first-class cricket. Michael played for Otago A and a New Zealand XI in 2014/15, then seriously injured his right shoulder. After several reconstructive surgeries, he played a couple of Ford Trophy games for the Auckland Aces in 2018/19. Moving to Wellington, he made his first-class debut for the Firebirds against Canterbury on the Basin Reserve in October 2019.

Michael played his first Ford Trophy game for the Firebirds against the Northern Knights on the Basin Reserve in February 2020. His first Super Smash game for the Firebirds was against the Auckland Aces on the Basin Reserve in December 2020, some two years before his second.
