Son of former Central Districts and Otago player Mark and nephew of former BLACK CAPS Brendan and John, Michael is a left-handed batter and right-arm off-spin bowler. Growing up in Dunedin he played 55 first-class games, 59 one-dayers and 51 T20s for the Otago Volts from 2010 to 2017. His first Plunket Shield game for the Firebirds was against the Auckland Aces on the Basin Reserve in October 2017, and his first Firebirds’ one-dayer was against the Northern Knights at Whangarei in December 2017. That month he also played his first Super Smash game for the Firebirds against the Knights at Hamilton. He was named the New Zealand ODI Player of the Year for 2022/23.
Michael made his ODI debut against the Netherlands at Mt Maunganui in March 2022, and his Test debut came against England at Nottingham in June 2022. His first T20I was against Ireland at Belfast in July 2022 and he has captained the BLACKCAPS’ ODI and T20I teams.
In January 2022 he hit 141* from just 65 balls with 11 sixes and 10 fours to lead the Firebirds to a Super Smash victory over the Central Stags on Pukekura Park by two wickets with one ball to spare. It remains the highest T20 score ever made in New Zealand. In the Otago Volts’ second innings in a Plunket Shield game on the Basin Reserve in March 2024 Michael took 8-41, the tenth best return ever for Wellington.
