James is a right-handed batter and right-arm fast-medium bowler originally from Manawatu. He is the son of David Hartshorn who played for NZ Under-19 in 1985/86, for Canterbury from 1984 to 1988 and for the Central Stags in 1993/94.
James played his first Ford Trophy game for the Firebirds against Canterbury at Hagley Oval in November 2020 and his first Plunket Shield game was against the Central Stags on the Basin Reserve a year later. James made his Super Smash debut against the Stags at Nelson in January 2025 taking 5-24, which is the best-ever T20 return by a Firebirds’ bowler. He played for a New Zealand XI against the Netherlands and Bangladesh in 2021/22 and 2022/23.
