Gareth is a right-handed top-order batter who came to New Zealand with his family at the age of eight. After representing Wellington at Under-17 and Under-19 level, he made his Plunket Shield debut against the Auckland Aces at Colin Maiden Park in March 2023, scoring 80 in the first innings. In his second game, against Northern Districts at Hamilton, Gareth made 196 runs in the second innings as the Firebirds fell three runs short in their pursuit of 391 for victory. His first Ford Trophy game was against the Canterbury Kings at Christchurch in November 2023 and his first Super Smash game was against the Kings on the Basin Reserve in January 2024. He played for Hayes CC in the Kent Cricket League during the winters of 2022, 2023 and 2024
