Wellington Blaze squad member Beth Molony will captain a strong Wellington U19 women's squad to compete at the National U19 Tournament at the New Zealand Cricket High Performamnce Centre in Lincoln in mid-December.
The squad, named today by head coach Rhys Morgan, includes three Blaze players - Molony, Xara Jetly and Natasha Codyre.
Coach Morgan said he was excited to begin preparations for what is likely to be an exciting tournament.
"The selectors are looking forward to seeing what the next generation of female cricketers can achieve," he said.
"Now is an exciting time for the women's game in New Zealand, with an U19 World Cup in 2021 and playing contracts on offer for domestic players.
"There are real opportunities for women to make a career out of the game and this tournament will be a fantastic opportunity for the girls to show that they are worthy of the opportunities available to them going forward.”
Cricket Wellington pathway manager Chris Nevin said he was looking forward to seeing what the squad could achieve over the coming months.
“It’s an exciting squad that has been assembled and we can’t wait to see them put all of the training they’ve been doing into action next month," he said.
"The added focus on women’s cricket over the last 12 months has meant selections this year were harder than ever and that is a great place to be in as an association.
"We have a number of players we’re hopeful will be able to impress the New Zealand selectors, with a view to the U19 Women's World Cup scheduled to take place in January 2021.”
The National U19 Tournament takes place at the New Zealand Cricket High Performance Centre in Lincoln from December 17-23.
