Best Female Initiative
Cricket Wellington
Cricket Wellington carried out a review of Girls and Women’s Cricket which led to a comprehensive improvement of opportunities and experiences for girls and women within the sport. This approach began with girls only Quikhit festival days for primary school girls at Year 5/6. Starting initially in 2013/14, 34 teams were entered across two tournaments and in 2014/15 the interest led to an additional tournament being scheduled, resulting in a total of 50 teams, representing 400 players experiencing a tournament style format.

The success of the girls Quikhit tournaments helped Cricket Wellington gain, through KiwiSport, funding for an additional part-time employee to concentrate fully on female cricket in Upper Hutt, working in conjunction with Cricket Wellington’s full time Community Development Officer – Female Cricket. The additional part-time employee will enable Cricket Wellington to schedule four tournaments for 2015/16, resulting in further growth with the medium term goal of these players transferring into local clubs.
