Wellington Firebirds team named for Round One of the Plunket Shield

The Wellington Firebirds team to play Auckland at Bay Oval, Mt Maunganui, from Saturday 22nd to Tuesday 25th October has been named, with new recruits Hamish Bennett and Hamish Marshall included in the twelve-man squad.

The team are looking to build on their third-place finish last season and Head Coach Bruce Edgar says they’ve prepared well during the preseason:

“We’ve been very lucky that Wellington’s spring weather has allowed us to train on grass wickets at the Basin since September. That training and the match practice we gained on our preseason trip to Napier have been excellent prep for this game.”

With the wickets at the Basin Reserve still a week away from being ready for First-Class cricket, Cricket Wellington have taken this home game on the road to Mt Maunganui’s Bay Oval. Firebirds’ captain Michael Papps says the team are excited about the trip:

“We played down at Nelson last season [against Central Districts] so we’re used to playing the odd home match away. We’ve got a few extra days to train up there and Mt Maunganui’s always a great place to play; good wicket and good facilities.”

The Wellington Firebirds squad is:

Michael Papps (Captain)

Hamish Bennett

Tom Blundell
