SuperStar Cricket Thriving in Upper Hutt

TMP hosted a SuperStar Cricket Festival day for both boys and girls in Years 5-6. With the boys/mixed grade split into two divisions, ten schools competed with a total of 18 teams. In the girls competition, four schools competed with one team each.

Upper Hutt Female Cricket Development Officer (FCDO) has been funded through an initiative between Cricket Wellington and KiwiSport with fantastic results as seen in the SuperStar Day. Justine Dunce, a former NZ WhiteFern who was brought up in Upper Hutt has taken on the part time role with fantastic results in the community.

Dunce has run SuperStar programmes in St. Josephs’s, Silverstream, Upper Hutt Primary and Trentham Primary with results clearly visible through the fun and skill displayed throughout the four round tournament.

With each SuperStar programme, Dunce teaches the basic skills of cricket working towards the Festival Day as the showpiece event. Visiting classes up to 6 times in each school, the students have learnt how to catch, throw, bowl and bat in a fun and fast environment.

On the Festival Day, each school played each other once before a play offs round. There were a number of close matches which went down to the last over and even to the last ball. Teammates, parents and supporters were all cheering from the sideline which helped to make a fantastic day out for everybody involved.

The Superstar Festival Day targets encouraging new entrants to the game using only a softball, meaning no equipment is needed. There are no boundaries so players have to run for every run and just 8 players per side meaning more ‘time on task’ for fielders. Players rotate around the field meaning each player bats, bowls, wicket keeps and fields in each position on the field.

Congratulations to Silverstream who won the girls division in a fantastically exciting final against Upper Hutt while St. Josephs finished victorius over a talented Trentham side.

Girls interested in taking up cricket at club level are invited to participate in Upper Hutt Girls only training which takes place at TMP each Friday evening. For further details, please contact Upper Hutt FCDO Justine Dunce at jdunce@xtra.co.nz.
