Winning starts for Karori, Taita and Naenae on opening day

Defending champions Karori, Taita and Naenae Old Boys won both matches on the first day of Wilkinson Pearce Cup matches in the Twenty 20 competitions. But there were two losses for Wellington Collegians, Upper Hutt and Eastern Suburbs.

In the Wilkinson Hazlett trophy Karori and Hutt District also won both their matches, while dual losses were incurred by Eastern Suburbs and Taita.

Taita captain Mark Houghton had a very good day by scoring 57 and then taking two wickets against Collegians, while against Easts he again top scored with 31.

Craig Cachopa was unbeaten during the day scoring 43 against North City and then 63 versus Upper Hutt. Stewart Rhodes scored 53 and then took 3 for 16 against Upper Hutt. Three players, Ricky Joseph, Sam McLauchlan and Clinton Butler, all had four wicket bags in the afternoon round.

The Hazlett Trophy highlight was Brad Kennedy taking 6 for 10 against Eastern Suburbs which enabled Wainuiomata to have a winning return to the grade. Neil Martin (Karori), Hasheem Silva (Johnsonville) and Fraser Colson (Hutt) scored fifties, while Andrew  Pollock (Easts) and Scott Edgecombe (Johnsonville) took four wickets in an innings.

The Pearce Cup and Hazlett Trophy One-Day competitions start this coming Saturday, 29 October, along with all other grades of cricket.
