Gillespie and Perry Cricket Wellington Awards Winners

Thursday, 12 April 2012

Mark Gillespie and Liz Perry were named the 2011-12 Men’s and Women’s Cricketers of the Year at last night's end of season Cricket Wellington Norwood Awards held at the Hawkins Basin Reserve.

As well as scooping the top awards, Gillespie and Perry also won two other major awards between them, Gillespie winning the Men’s Outstanding Bowler accolade and Perry also collecting the Outstanding Women’s Batswoman award.

Other noted individual award winners were James Franklin as the Men’s Outstanding Batsman, Lucy Doolan as the Women’s Outstanding Bowler, Jeetan Patel and Andrea Stockwell as the Men’s and Women’s Outstanding Fielders and Luke Woodcock and Doolan as the Men’s and Women’s Best All-rounders.

In age grade awards, Harry Boam was named Cricket Wellington’s most outstanding U23 cricketer for the season, Scott Kuggeleijn won the U20 Men’s award and Deanna Doughty the U20 Women’s award.

Men’s Cricketer of the Year Mark Gillespie is a prime example of a sportsman never giving up, after previous injuries had threatened to prematurely end his career. Gillespie was the Wellington Firebirds’ leading wicket-taker in the Plunket Shield, his compelling form earning him a recall to the BLACKCAPS for the final two Tests against South Africa. Here he excelled, taking career best international figures of 6 for 113 on his home ground at the Hawkins Basin Reserve and becoming the second New Zealander to take three 5-wicket bags in his first five Tests.

His unorthodox batting also hit the headlines, his ‘no-look six’ turning heads and his scoring of the required runs in the Basin Test averting the follow-on and subsequently saving the Test.

In six Plunket Shield matches for the Firebirds this season, Mark Gillespie took 30 wickets at an average of 27.53, including career best figures of 6 for 41. He also captured his first 10-wicket haul for the Firebirds. In taking nine wickets in the Ford Trophy domestic One-Day competition, he became the first Wellington player to take 100 domestic One-Day wickets.

Gillespie is a past winner having won the Men’s Cricketer of the Year award in 2005-6.

Women’s Cricketer of the Year Perry cemented her place in the White Ferns side by playing in every game of the international summer against England and Australia. She scored 149 runs in all matches and took the most catches by an outfielder including a brilliant catch in Australia that was replayed by Channel 9 in their Classic Catches segment.

For the Wellington Blaze, Perry scored 263runs, including her maiden 50-over century, 101, against eventual Action Cricket Women’s One-Day winners Canterbury. In the 50-over competition she averaged 47.00.

Men’s Outstanding Batsman James Franklin scored 1,037 for the Wellington Firebirds across all three formats of the game. He scored 270 in the HRV Cup Twenty20 competition, 231 in the Ford Trophy and 536 in the Plunket Shield. In addition he scored 179 runs for the BLACKCAPS.

Women’s outstanding bowler Lucy Doolan took 21 wickets for the Wellington Blaze and the White Ferns. For the Blaze she regularly opened the bowling, her off-spin bowling yielding 14 wickets

Women’s Outstanding Fielder and Blaze wicket-keeper Andrea Stockwell effected 15 dismissals, including a notable performance against the Northern Spirit in which she took three catches and took two stumpings in one innings.

In another highlight from the Norwood Awards, recently retired Wellington Blaze captain Megan Wakefield was awarded a specially signed Wellington Blaze jersey in recognition of her career for Wellington. In 11 seasons for the Blaze, Wakefield played 91 domestic women’s One-Day matches, scoring a Wellington provincial women’s record 2,124 runs and, and played 29 domestic Twenty20  matches, scoring 562 runs.  She appeared in several women’s domestic finals and helped them win the Twenty20 final against the Canterbury Magicians at the Hawkins Basin Reserve three seasons ago.

Johnsonville’s Barry Rhodes won the Wellington club cricket Bruce Murray Medal, which recognises fair play in the Wilkinson Pearce Cup and Hazlett Trophy grades, as judged on a points system awarded by opposing captains throughout the season. Naenae Old Boys bowler Adam Williams won the Wilkinson’s Pearce Cup Men’s Club Cricketer of the Year accolade for taking 61 wickets at an average of 10.70. For the second year, a special Wilkinson Pearce Cup Team of the Season was announced at the awards.
