Ellison century and McKenzie hat trick part of club cricket highlights

A Marc Ellison century and a first innings lead to Karori over Taita in the Premier grade and 30 wickets falling in the Senior Johnsonville - Upper Hutt game including a Jason McKenzie hat-trick were part of the highlights of club cricket on Saturday.

In the first day of two-day Premier matches, Karori dismissed Taita for 155. Michael Green scored 59 and Lee Edwards took 4-48. In reply Karori had reached 164 for 5 thanks to a blistering century from Marc Ellison. He scored 104 from 115 balls to enable Karori to take the six first innings points.

Championship leaders Eastern Suburbs bowled Naenae Old Boys out for 236. B-J Crook and Phil Tunnicliffe scored fifties for the Hutt Valley side while English pro Danny Evans took 6 for 91 from 22 overs. At stumps Easts were 169 for 4, Josh Brodie unbeaten on 78.

Onslow had the better of its game with Hutt District. Hutt took 66 overs to score 175, with extras top scoring on 41. There were also three run outs in the innings. Onslow were 123 for 3 off 35 overs at close of play, Neal Parlane unbeaten on 64 from 80 balls.

Bottom placed University had one of its better days making 228 against North City, Nick Wanden top scoring with 55 and Fraser Quarterman taking 3 for 28. At the end of play Norths were 68 for 2.

In the Senior competition, 30 wickets fell between Johnsonville and Upper Hutt. On a wicket giving the bowlers some assistance, Upper Hutt made 111 with Luke Woodcock taking 5 for 12 and Ryan Isaac 3 for 21. Woodcock then carried his bat for 32 but Johnsonville were bowled out for a mere 63. Jason McKenzie took a hat-trick in his first over and ended with 6 for 31. Matt Taylor got 4 for 31. With its lead of 48, Upper Hutt were then dismissed for 54. Gareth Powell took  4 for 12. Johnsonville were 3 without loss at the close of play.

Competition leaders Collegians conceded first innings points to nearest challengers Petone-Riverside. The Hutt Valley side were bowled out for 121 but then dismissed Collegians for 120 who were well placed at 82 for 2 at one point.  At close of play Petone-Riverside were 69 for 5.

 Taita made 239 against Karori with Matt Lewer getting an unbeaten 80 batting at number 10. James Hill took 4 for 77. Karori were 115 for 4 at stumps.

Norths made 179 against Wellington College thanks to Elliott Brookes hitting 93 off 54 balls. Ollie McIlroy and Callum Thornton took three wickets. College then made 134 with Michael Hayward getting 4 for 25. At stumps Norths were 23 for 3 in its second innings with an overall lead of 78.

In the Women’s competition Blaze captain Megan Wakefield had a good day scoring 40 and taking three wickets as Johnsonville defeated Hutt.
