Ellison and Dry head 2010/11 Wilkinson Pearce Cup statistics

Karori’s Marc Ellison was the leading run scorer and Eastern Suburbs’ Lance Dry the leading wicket taker of the 2010/11 Wilkinson Pearce Cup competition.

Ellison topped the Pearce Cup run scoring charts with 708 runs, at an average of 37.26 with two hundreds and two fifties and a highest score of 113 not out. Ellison’s match double of 87 and 40 in the final against Easts at the Hawkins Basin Reserve contributed to Karori’s maiden intercity Pearce Cup title win.

Three other players scored more than 600 runs: Wellington Collegians’ Deepak Joon (664 at 39.06), Onslow’s Liam Chrisp (620 at 36.47) and Karori’s Stephen Murdoch (617 at 44.07). Seven other players scored between 500 and 600 runs in this year’s Pearce Cup.

Eastern Suburbs captain Lance Dry relinquished the Pearce Cup after nine seasons at the top, but individually he had opposition in a spin all summer taking 56 wickets at an average of 13.7 per scalp. This included two seven wicket bags.  Dry also scored 389 runs at 35.36 including his maiden club century and was the Men’s Club Cricketer of the Year.

Left arm opening bowler Julian Brown took the next most Pearce Cup wickets with 53 at 14.81 with a best of 7 for 56. This was followed by Karori’s Fraser Quaterman (49 wickets at 13.06), Karori’s Lee Edwards (43 at 14.67) and Naenae Old Boys’ Michael Cornish (42 at 17.98).

In the Wilkinson Hazlett Trophy Grade, the blade of Johnsonville’s Barry Rhodes yielded a mighty 883 runs at 51.94 including 8 fifties. Rhodes was thus the leading run scorer across both grades and his was the most runs in a single season since 1989 when Andy Wilson belted 969 at 60.56 for Onslow. It is also the sixth best ever by an individual batsman in a single season.

Upper Hutt duo Leighton Morgan (794 runs at 46.71) and Matt Taylor (737 runs at 56.38) were also prominent at the crease in the Senior grade. Taylor also took 18 wickets and the Wilkinson Hazlett Trophy grade Men’s Club Cricketer of the Year.

Upper Hutt’s Jason McKenzie was the Hazlett Trophy’s leading wicket taker with 50 wickets at 15.5, which included a best of 7 for 88. The next most was by Petone-Riverside’s Mark Hewson who took 40 wickets at 10.35, with a best of 5 for 69.

The runs flowed in 2010/11, with a total of 22 hundreds and 58 fifties scored throughout the Pearce Cup season. The highest individual score of the summer was reserved until last, with Karori’s Hamish Templeton’s 176 not out in the Pearce Cup the best individual knock of the summer. The next two highest innings were 148 by Ash Russell for Naenae Old Boys and 134 not out by Cameron Merchant for Taita.

There were 23 five wicket bags and three 10 wickets in a match Pearce Cup hauls this season. Julian Brown took five wickets in an innings three times and had one 10 wicket match bag, while Onslow’s Andrew Lamb and Karori’s Jarred Sewell were the other bowlers to capture 10 wickets in a match. Of note, Sewell achieved it in the final on the Basin Reserve.

Stewart Rhodes (Onslow) took the best individual Pearce Cup figures in 2010/11 with 7 for 50, while Dry (7 for 55), Brown ( 7 for 56), Ronald Karaitiana (Naenae Old Boys, 7 for 68) and Jeetal Patel (Eastern Suburbs, 7 for 99) also had noted bowling spells.

In the Hazlett Trophy, Upper Hutt’s Leighton Morgan (210 not out), Karori’s Stefan Allan (178) and Taita’s Matthew Rose (147) and Petone-Riverside’s Matt Goldsbury (147) hit the highest individual scores in four of 21 Senior grade centuries hit in 2010/11.

Ben Gamble (Eastern Suburbs) took 7 for 40 and Jason McKenzie (Upper Hutt) took 7 for 88 in the two best bowling spells of the Hazlett Trophy summer. Matt Sadd (University, 6 for 15) and Andrew Pollock (Easts, 6 for 25) also had notable performances.

Of the wicket keepers, Onslow’s Blair Parlane topped the Pearce Cup dismissals list with 27 catches and three stumpings. Daniel van der Hayden was the most successful wicket keeper in the Hazlett Trophy with 25 catches and six stumpings

In the Senior Women’s grade, Onslow’s Nicoal Kaiwai was the leading run scorer with 303 runs at 37.88, ahead of Onslow teammate Renee Moffit who hit 271 runs. Hutt Districts’ Sophie Devine hit the highest score of the season with 115 – in her only club outing of the season.

Wellington Collegians’ Allex Evans was the leading wicket taker with 28 wickets, ahead of Maddie Chapman (Onslow) and Lucy Doolan (Hutt District) who each took 20 wickets for the season.
