Rain again affected the Dominion Post Premier and Senior competitions in its penultimate round, setting up a hotly contested last round of matches on 14 and 21 March.
In the Dominion Post competition, just three points separate the leading trio of Karori, Easts and Taita, while fourth and fifth placed Naenae Old Boys and Onslow are still alive to make the final if they can secure outright wins in the last round and other results go their way.
In one of just two Premier matches that got underway on Saturday, Karori took the opportunity to leapfrog Eastern Suburbs by virtue of a nine wicket win over Upper Hutt in a reduced over game. Upper Hutt made 95 which Karori passed with only one wicket down.
In the only other match that got underway, reduced to 39 overs per side, Taita beat Hutt district to be right behind Easts in third place.
Taita batted first and scored 177 for 7 with Steve Gellatly scoring an unbeaten 74 from 77 balls. Hutt were then dismissed for 114 with Darren Cudby the only player to reach 30. Andrew Sturt took 4 for 27.
Senior leaders Johnsonville all but secured the top qualifier place for the final by beating Taita in a close finish, but the battle is on over the last round between University, Taita, Wellington College and Petone-Riverside to earn the right to meet them in the final.
Johnsonville bowled Taita out for 89 with Sam Outtrim capturing 4 for 10 and Ryan Isaac 3 for16. Johnsonville struggled but won by three wickets, Mark Pulley scoring an unbeaten 31.
Johnsonville’s closest rivals University lost to seventh placed North City by two wickets. University scored 148 with Colin Owens scoring 52 and Louis Kraucamp taking 3 for 21.Norths lost eight wickets but won with three overs to spare. Mark Frew got an unbeaten 51 and Graham Murray took 3 for14.
In a close game Petone-Riverside defeated Collegians by six runs. The Hutt Valley side made 112 with Mark Hewson leading the way with 35. Pat Whelan took 5 for 35 including his second hat-trick of the season. Collegians made 106 with Sam Blandford getting 4 for 15.
In the Women’s competition Onslow retained its title when it beat Collegians. Amanda Cooper took 4 for 3 as Collegians were dismissed for 52. Onslow won by 9 wickets.
The Joy Lamason Trophy will remain safely ensconced at Nairnville Park for the fifth consecutive winter after Onslow’s nearest rivals Taita lost to Hutt District. Megan Wakefield scored 30 as Taita made 151. Natalie Cowan took 3 for 30. Hutt scored 153 for 7 with Andrea Stockwell 56 and Nara Narasy 43. Carlene Angus took 3 for 29
