The top two sides in the Wilkinson Pearce Cup are both in plenty of trouble after the opening afternoon of two-day cricket of the season.
Champions Karori had the ignominy of having to follow on in their game against Onslow, while second placed Naenae Old Boys conceded first innings points to Eastern Suburbs. Wellington Collegians obtained first innings points against Upper Hutt and Taita had the better of North City.
Karori started well, having Onslow at 99 for 6 before a fight back led by Sam Foley (58) carried them to 186. Lee Edwards took 5 for 53 and Charlie McLean 3 for 50. Karori were looking comfortable at 60 for 3 but then lost seven wickets for just 16 runs as Andrew Lamb took 5 for 25. Following on 110 behind, Karori were 15 without loss at stumps.
Naenae were bundled out for 98 against Eastern Suburbs. The game had to be moved to an old wicket on Naenae 1 as vandals rode bikes over the intended playing strip. Michael Burns had his first five wicket haul for Easts, taking 5 for 41. Easts obtained a first innings lead of 29 thanks to a fifty from Jeremy Dean. Adam Williams continued his good form taking 6 for 34 and he received good support from Ronald Karaitiana 4 for 36 . Naenae lost both openers before stumps and were 11 for 2.
Taita had the biggest score of the day making 259 for 9 against North City, Mark Houghton top scoring with 76. Tipene Friday and Hamish Kyne both took three wickets. Norths were 24 for 5 at the close of play with plenty of work to do next week.
Upper Hutt made 101 against Collegians who were indebted to captain Julian Brown taking another five wicket haul. Collegians got a lead of 22 declaring at 123-9. Matt Taylor took 4 for 30. At close of play Upper Hutt were 2-1 in their second innings.
In the Wilkinson Hazlett Trophy , Wainuiomata got a first innings lead over Hutt District. Hutt batted first and made just 71, Sam Winter leading the way with 4 for 20. Wainui were 182 for 8 at close of play. Robbie Sewell made 77 while Fergus Martin took five wickets.
The Johnsonville v Taita match was a real example of ups and downs. Johnsonville batted first making 246 for 6, Gareth Powell scoring an unbeaten 106. Taita made the worst possible start losing their first three wickets at 0, - in fact six of the first seven batsmen failed to score. Phil Crothers hit out and was unbeaten on 80 with Taita on 111-8. David Hudson took 5 for 23.
Karori made 212 against Easts with Harry Wright top scoring with 70. Easts in reply were 162 for 8, Jamie O’Donnell scoring 69 and Simon Kent taking 4 for 34.
There were two good all-round performances in the Petone-Riverside –University game. The Hutt Valley side batted first and made 149 thanks in the main to Kieran Butler scoring an unbeaten 69.The last three wickets added 60. Hamish Evans took 6 for 34 and then top scored in the students’ innings of 84 for 7. Butler opened the bowling and took 4 for 12 from 9 overs.
