Bonus point wins in weekend’s club cricket

The fifth round of matches for the Wilkinson Ewen Chatfield Cup that were played on Saturday and Sunday saw bonus point wins in all seven games. Karori, Upper Hutt, Taita, Eastern Suburbs, Onslow Johnsonville and the Wellington U20s all had emphatic victories in the Premier club 50-over competition.
 
The highlight of the round was a century and a bag of wickets to recalled Wellington Firebird Mark Houghton who scored 104 for Taita in their score of 293 for 9 and then took 3 for 33 as Wainuiomata could make only 139.

Luke Woodcock, who Houghton has replaced in the Firebirds squad for this week’s match in Auckland, saw Johnsonville through to their first win of the season. Johnsonville scored 200 against North City. In reply, Norths were looking comfortable  at 67 without loss but then lost all ten wickets for a further 35 -Woodcock taking 5 for 29. Firebird Michael Pollard posted the only score of note for North City with 41.

New outright leaders Karori made 289 for 8 against Collegians, with Chris Spring getting his second successive fifty. Collegians were dismissed in the 30th over for 162. Jarrad Sewell and Fraser Quarterman both took three wickets.

Last year’s Pearce Cup and One-Day champions Eastern Suburbs scored 194 against Naenae Old Boys, with Jamie Gibson scoring 52. Craig James took 3 for 44. Naenae made 117 in 33.1 overs, Easts captain Lance Dry doing the damage with 4 for 24.

Upper Hutt dismissed Hutt District for 142 in 42 overs, with Daniel Henderson taking 3 for 14 from 9 overs. In reply Upper Hutt’s Matt Taylor dominated the bowling scoring an unbeaten 73 as they lost only three wickets getting to their target.

Onslow scored 193 for 8 against Petone-Eastbourne, five players all passed 20 in the innings. The Hutt valley side then made 140 in 43.2 overs with Peter Vorster taking three wickets.

In the seventh match of the round, the Wellington U20s beat previous joint leaders University by 63 runs.

Eastern Suburbs 194 in 49.5 overs (J Gibson 52; C James 3-44) beat Naenae Old Boys 117 (A Williams 47; L Dry 4-24 in 33.1 overs by 77 runs

Onslow 193-8 (B Rhodes 31; S Blandford 2-27) beat Petone Eastbourne 140-9 (M Hewson 40; P Vorster 3-26) in 43.2 overs by 53 runs

Johnsonville 200 in 49.4 overs (G Powell 48, M Pulley 44; B Turner 3-18) beat North City 102 in 34.2 overs (M Pollard 41; L Woodcock 5-29) by 98 runs

Wellington U20 197
(S Thomas 3-43) beat University 134 in 41 overs (G Wilmott 24*) by 63 runs
