Batsmen prospered in Round six of the Wellington Premier club cricket Wilkinson Ewen Chatfield Cup One-Day competition, with five centuries scored in the seven games played on Saturday and Sunday.
Playing through champions Eastern Suburbs and Karori have become the first two teams to qualify for the Pearce Cup, the leading pair opening up an eight point lead over the third placed side with just one round to play before the competition splits into a top four.
Two centuries were scored in the University versus Onslow game which yielded the closest result of the round, Onslow winning with two balls to spare. The students had scored 235 for 6 with Matthew Lewis continuing his good form scoring 112 from 136 deliveries. Onslow achieved their target thanks to Barry Rhodes who scored 105 from 143 balls.
Two centuries were scored between bottom placed Wainuiomata and North City. Wainuiomata compiled their best score this season making 223 with Brad Kennedy getting 109. Dane Hutchinson took 4 for 30 and was aided by Neeraj Chawla who took 3 for 29. Chawla then assisted Michael Pollard in an unbroken second wicket partnership which secured victory for North City. Pollard made 130 and Chawla 79.
Easts made 186 in their game against Upper Hutt, with Justin Davis and Andrew McHugh both taking three wickets. In reply, Upper Hutt were dismissed for 147, two runs short of denying Easts a bonus point. Lance Dry took 4 for 17.
The biggest upset of the round was in the local derby between Taita and Naenae Old Boys Naenae, languishing at the bottom, convincingly beat top four contenders Taita by seven wickets to retain the Jack Trask Cup.Taita made just 105 with Michael Cornish doing the damage with three wickets. Matt Robins then hit an unbeaten 50 to give Naenae victory with 22 overs to spare.
Petone-Eastbourne made 186 against Wellington Collegians, and this was due to a 75-run stand for the last wicket between Kieran Butler and Ben Saunders. The former top scored in the innings with 44 not out. Malaesaili Tugaga and Scott Kuggeleijn both snared three wickets. Kuggeleijn then scored 89 from 85 balls to secure Collegians a seven wicket win.
Hutt District made just 112 against Johnsonville, with David Hudson taking three wickets. Ian McPeake had the best bowling figures of the day when Johnsonville batted, taking 5 for 34, but Luke Woodcock’s 48 got Johnsonville home by three wickets.
On Sunday, Wellington Firebirds Plunket Shield captain Stephen Murdoch led Karori to a convincing bonus point win over the Wellington U20s, scoring 146 off 119 balls as they chased down 274 to win in 39.3 overs.
The U20s posted a competitive 273 for 7 off their 50 overs batting first, Jamie Gibson (63), Matthew Lewis (43), Ben Johnson (40), Sam Le Gros (34) and Kieran Butler (32) all contributing. Simon Baker returned the best figures for Karori with 2 for 31 off 10 overs.
Opening the innings in the run chase, Murdoch hit nine sixes and 11 fours in his 146. Sean Eathorne scored a breezy 46, while Josh Cuttance took three wickets for the U20s.
Key matches in next week’s final round are Onslow versus Karori, Taita versus Johnsonville and University versus Collegians.
