Cricket fans in and around Wellington will be treated to a late Christmas gift this summer when Cricket Wellington offer free entry to the Burger King Super Smash double header between the Canterbury Kings and Magicians and the Wellington Blaze and Firebirds on January 6.
Entry will be free to say thank you to all Wellington cricket fans after the Firebirds were unable to host their Ford Trophy elimination final against Auckland last month.
“It was obviously a shame we were unable to host the Ford Trophy elimination final, so to say thanks to our dedicated fans and to celebrate the Firebirds’ Ford Trophy win we’re opening the gates,” said Cricket Wellington CEO Cam Mitchell.
The day will be made all-the-more special with both the women’s and men’s teams competing on the same day in the second double-header of the summer hosted at the Basin Reserve.
The Blaze, captained by Liz Perry, will take on the Canterbury Magicians in the day’s first game, before the Firebirds take on the Kings in a revamped Burger King Super Smash campaign that now includes the women’s teams in the competition.
Mitchell said the double-headers are a great opportunity to showcase women’s cricket.
“There are some really talented women coming through the ranks in Wellington and the double-headers will be a great opportunity show the world what they can do,” he said.
Wellington Blaze coach Christie Van Dyk said the Basin crowd will be in for some excitement when the Blaze take the field.
“Playing at the Basin is a privilege. We can’t wait to provide the excitement and enthusiasm to a great day of cricket at the Basin. The quality of skill levels and innovation will blow you away. We would love to see a packed Basin crowd to support both our teams with heaps of entertainment and a fun day of cricket.”
The day promises to be a great day out for all with top quality cricket on offer, as well as a range of activities on the embankment for the family.
The Blaze get the day started against the Canterbury Magicians at 12.45 before the Firebirds take on the Canterbury Kings at 4.00 – entry is free!
