College Cricket Review Underway

Cricket Wellington and College Sport have decided to jointly review college cricket in Wellington.  It has been approximately 15 years since college cricket was reviewed and clearly the educational, community, and cricket landscapes have all changed markedly since then.

The purpose of the review is to assess the health of the game, including its structure and delivery, and to ensure that it remains relevant and accessible both today and into the future.

A Review Committee has been established and has started consulting with interested parties. The Committee consists of Bruce Murray (Chairman), Rodney Moore (Chairman, College Sport Cricket Committee), Peter Clinton (Development Manager, Cricket Wellington), Todd Foster (College Sport Cricket Committee), Alec Astle (SPARC, and former National Development Manager, NZ Cricket), Brett Windley (College Sport Cricket Committee). All submissions and comments are welcomed by the Committee, and there are different options for parties to make their submissions.  Further information can be found on the attached Information Paper.

Consultation meetings start on Wednesday 23 June, and are scheduled as follows:

Wellington College, Dufferin Street, Mt Victoria

Wednesday 23 June, 6.00pm

Wellington Girls’ College wins NZCT Girls Regional Final

On Thursday 5 November Wellington Girls’ College won entry in to the National Finals of the NZCT Cup by beating St Mary’s College at IanGallowayPark.

Wellington Girls' College with the Gail Heather Trophy.

Wellington Girls were sent in to bat by St Mary’s, and were restricted to a slow start due to some economical bowling from Maddy Chapman in difficult, windy conditions. However Wellington Girls recovered well with excellent contributions from Hannah Austin-Smellie (33) and Kate Southorn (28*) and were well supported by some big hitting in the final overs by Whetu Charteris (29) including a couple of big sixes, one of which disappeared well out of the ground.

Wellington Girls posted 180 for 8 wickets at the end of their 40 overs.

St Marys' innings never really got going, though they did have some handy contributions from Rosemary Cockle and Tamara Gould. But some very tidy bowling from Penny Roy (3 for 12), Mikayla Symons (2 for 5) and Stephanie Bremner (2 for 9) ensured that St Mary’s lost regular wickets and never really threatened Wellington Girls’ target and eventually fell short and were bowled out for 74.

It was an excellent game of cricket with some outstanding skills on display, but Wellington Girls were the deserving victors on the day. Good luck to them as they head off to represent the Wellington region in the NZCT National Finals.
