Zone Tournaments
Throughout December and January, Cricket Wellington will be holding the Zone Tournaments at Year 9, 10 and 11. 3 teams will be picked at all levels and will be joined by a development team from the year group below for 4 team tournaments. The playing format will be a mixture of 50 over cricket and T20.
Cricket Wellington Development Manager Bryan Dickinson is enthused about the Zone Tournaments, saying “we’re really excited about how these tournaments grown over the past few seasons.”
Zone Cricket provides playing opportunities to players at a time of the year where the weather is traditionally more settled but not much cricket is actually played. Previously this time of the year was solely the domain of rep teams. Now over 120 Y9-11 players will be exposed to competitive cricket. This will go a long way to raising the overall standard of the game in Wellington and lead to healthy competition for places across representative and development teams.
In addition to Zone Tournaments at Year 9, 10 and 11 level, Cricket Wellington will be inaugurating a Secondary Schools representative series between Wellington and Hutt Valley. The Wellington Secondary Schools Representative Team will play Hutt Valley Secondary Schools in a series of matches in December. Players for these teams will be picked from 1st XI’s.
Cricket Wellington Director of Cricket, Robbie Kerr believes that these fixtures will add some real value to the age group pathway in Wellington. “There is a long standing rivalry between Wellington and Hutt Valley. With the re-introduction of annual fixtures for the Dempster Shield at mens level, it seems only natural for Cricket Wellington to be offering this fixture at secondary school level. This fixture will provide a high level of competition for our age group cricketers and add a real point of interest to our programme at this level.’
The three zones for each year group will be as follows:
| Wellington Gold | Wellington Black | Hutt Valley |
| Wellington College | Scots College | HIBS |
| St Pats Wellington | Onslow College | HVHS |
| Rongotai College | Tawa College | St Pats Stream |
| Wellington High School | Aotea College | Upper Hutt College |
| | Newlands College | St Bernards |
| | | Heretaunga |
| | | Naenae College |
| | | Taita College |

Year 10 Zone Tournament
16-19 December Trentham Memorial Park
Year 11 Zone Tournament

29 January 2012: Wins for Wellington Year 9s in all three matches against Canterbury
The Wellington Year 9 representative side beat their Canterbury counterparts by 10-wickets in a Two-Day fixture at Kelburn Park last Monday and Tuesday and followed that up a 14-run One-Day victory at Linden Park on Wednesday.

The Wellington Year 9s leaving the field at Kelburn Park on Tuesday after bowling out Canterbury for a second time
Canterbury won the toss and elected to bowl in cloudy conditions at the start of the Two-Day match. Wellington were bowled out for 246, with captain Troy Johnson top scoring with 72 before being run out. There were also useful contributions from Joseph Bowden (37) and Christian Martin (34). For Canterbury, Baden Thatcher took 2 for 12.
In reply, Canterbury were in early trouble and ended the first day at 37 for 4. The second day started with Wellington continuing to exert their dominance and they dismissed Canterbury for 99 (Kenneth Tuffin and Sunni Kanuparthi two wickets each) for a first innings lead of 147.
In their second innings, following a good start which was lead by 30 from opener Callum Hill, Canterbury slumped from 43 for 0 to 83 for 8. However some resolute lower order batting from Will Jordan (59) and Jack Hyde (17no) denied Wellington and pushed them up to 168.
For Wellington, the damage was done by Calvin Harrison who took 6 for 41 and Ben Sears who snared 3 for 28. Wellington were left requiring 17 to win from 7 overs which they achieved with the loss of a one wicket to secure a 9-wicket victory.
In the One-Day match on Wednesday, Wellington were bowled out 199 in the 47th over. Captain Troy Johnson top scored with 66 and Baden Thatcher took 3 for 10 off his seven overs for the visitors.
Canterbury started well in their chase and were well placed at 89 for 1 after 24 overs, but a superb effort in the field, which included three run outs and some economical bowling, saw them end up 14 runs short after finishing on 185-7 off their 50 overs.
Matt Hay top scored with 57, while the best of the bowlers was Kenneth Tuffin who took 2 for 22 from his nine overs.
Wellington Year 9 coach Matt Tilley was thrilled with his team’s performances, saying the side gelled really well.
“A real positive factor in our results against strong Canterbury opposition was the way the players came together and competed really well as a group,” Tilley said. “Our 12 players were selected from eight different colleges and they quickly created a really special environment.”
Tilley added that a highlight of the three days cricket came late on the first day on Monday when they had Canterbury reeling. “After we scored 246, our two opening bowlers Kenneth Tuffin and Sunni Kanuparthi bowled lightning quick spells to put the shivers up Canterbury and we were really fizzing that evening. That really set up our outright win and we were able to enforce the follow-on and then bowl them out a second time on Tuesday.”
“In the One-Dayer the next day we probably scored 20-30 runs too few, and they were cruising early in their run chase. But we were able to reproduce the same energy in the field as the day before and strangled them in the end to win the game.”
The Wellington team was:
Troy Johnson (captain, HIBS)
Adam Blackwell (Wellington College)
Joseph Bowden (Newlands College)
Zac Donaldson (St Pat’s Town)
Sam Gifkins (Onslow College)
Calvin Harrison (Onslow Junior Cricket Club)
Bradley Johns (Aotea College)
Akansh(Sunny) Kanuparthi (HIBS)
Christian Martin (Wellington College)
Jack Nelson-Murray (Wellington College)
Kenneth Tuffin (St Pat’s Silverstream)
Ben Sears (HIBS)
Coaches: Matt Tilley and Matt Hunt
Manager: Murray Johns

19 October 2011: Double ton for Walsh
Article by Tim Barton, the Dominion Post 19 October 2011:
Henry Walsh has always timed it well.
The St Pat's Silverstream cricket star saved his best for last when he signed off his school career in spectacular fashion last week.
Walsh, a powerful right-hand batsman, was playing his last game for Silverstream when he scored 225 – out of a total of 369 – from 245 balls in the traditional fixture against St Bede's College in Christchurch.
Walsh's mammoth effort, which included seven sixes and 24 fours, took Silverstream from a precarious position to one of dominance.
