This intermediate course offers beginner coaches a slightly more edgy exposure to the delivery of the game and supplies them with an opportunity to both see and do the drills that are required to further develop skill acquisition in players at these levels.
This course is non-examinable and is run over two nights focusing on these basic principles of coaching. The Coaching a Cricket team manual is also available at this course for a charge of $30.00.
Club convenors are more than welcome to request these courses be run at their clubs to assist coaches in acquiring the skills to enhance their coaching. Requests for such courses need to made in a timely fashion and these can be lodged with the Coaching Director, Mark Borthwick at Cricket Wellington.
Such requests will be given priority as they are an ideal opportunity for volunteer administrators and coaches at the club to get together and learn from each other as well as establish some fellowship and camaraderie.

New Zealand Cricket Level I course
Cricket Wellington traditionally run three NZC Level I courses in the calendar year. The first of these is usually in Upper Hutt in May and June and then two consecutive courses are run in Wellington through July, August, September and October. The Level I course carries a charge of $150.00 and runs for three hours on each of the six consecutive Monday nights it takes to complete the ‘in’ course work.
The course requires candidates to complete a workbook, write an umpiring exam and submit to a practical test as well as conducting an observed coaching session and supplying the assessor with a plan of the coaching session.
The assessors are Cricket Wellington Coachforce personnel who have completed the required assessors courses as set down by NZC.
The course is an ideal course for coaches who are interested in becoming better coaches and targets the understanding of ages and stages of youth development. There is a strong focus on developing coaches who have an athlete centred approach and therefore understand their charges and are able to plan accordingly.
All sessions run from 6.00pm – 9.00pm on Monday nights
Wk 1 Course Introduction, responsibilities of the coach workshop, umpiring.

New Zealand Cricket Level II course
Update 7 June: Jason Yuill-Proctor, who was responsible for writing the Level II generic modules, will be in Wellington presenting these modules to aspiring Level II coaches. He will be in Wellington on the 12 and 19 June for the presentations.
Cricket Wellington run an NZC Level II course through the winter every year. This course targets expert coaches who are interested in taking on a more challenging coaching role. Generally coaches applying to this course need to have a good local track record and experience coaching senior club and/or junior and youth representative teams prior to involving themselves in such a course.
The course is both physically and mentally demanding and requires attendance at 8 to 10 weekend sessions. The in course work requires 35 hours of in course attendance. The course also requires candidates to be examined and they are expected to complete both theory papers and practical tests to gain certification. The theory papers are assessed by an independent assessor nominated and appointed by New Zealand Cricket. In general the completion of this qualification takes a year and this is inclusive of the logged 100 hours of practical coaching that is a requirement for Level II coaches. The Level II course carries a charge of $250.00
The Level II course has undergone significant changes over the last few years. The course is a technically demanding course and requires a good knowledge of the game. The focus on the ‘art of coaching’ is of huge benefit and is timely in terms of assisting coaches to develop the tools to service the needs of the individual athlete but also the team of individual athletes that we see emerging in modern times.
