30 January: Girls Year 10 and Under tournament report

The Wellington representative Year 10 and Under Girls representative team competed in a tournament against the Manawatu U17, Canterbury U15, Taranaki U17 and Wanganui U17 sides in Wanganui from 10-13 January.

The tournament was affected by weather, with just three and a half matches out of a scheduled six able to be played.

Wellington’s first match was against the Manawatu U17s.  Wellington bowled reasonably well and when rain stopped play they had Manawatu 102 for 8 and may well have won this game if it had gone the distance.

Their second match, perhaps their best overall performance, was against a well prepared Canterbury U15 team.  Canterbury batted first and made 183 for 7.  It was a hot day and the girls stuck to their task well taking wickets at regular intervals.  Wellngton batted well. They had an opening stand of 72 and with one over to go we were 155 for 5.  They ended up 164 for 8 with three run outs in the last over as they tried to get as close to Canterbury’s score as possible.

The third match was against a strong Taranaki U17 team.  The physical difference in the teams was remarkable.  They were also a skilled bowling and fielding unit.  Taranaki batted first and Wellington performed very creditably in restricting them to 155 for 6 in their 30 overs.  Wellington were dismissed for 81.

The fourth match was against a make up Wanganui under 17 team which although physically strong were not skilled, some having played very little cricket.  Wellington batted first and made 180 for 4 and then dismissed Wanganui for 97.

Wellington were fortunate that Umaya Ranaweera batted very well.  In her three innings as an opener she made 113 runs.  She was only out once and retired having made 53 (against Canterbury) and 51 (against Wanganui).  Emma Fulbrook batted well against Canterbury making 41 and Makaylah Mason-Jones, Florence Marshall, Hannah Tunley and Jessica Packe played some useful backup innings.

We had greater depth in our bowling.  Hannah Tunley bowled a good line and length and was our top wicket taker with nine wickets.  Umaya and Emma bowled well, each taking four wickets and Roshani Thuraisingham, Natalia Afendoulis, Megan Macrae and Florence all took wickets and bowled good spells.  Danielle Watson and Jessy Lewis also bowled well but without luck.

Florence and Asha Strom kept wickets well with Florence taking three very good catches.

Umaya deservedly received the MVP award for the tournament.  She was certainly a standout performer.

29 December: Girls Year 10 and Under Wellington Development team tournament report 2011

The Development team attended the Central Districts Under 15 tournament (selecting Central Districts YR 10 rep team) held in Palmerston North between 13-15 December . The format was a Twenty20 round-robin, also involvingManawatu, Hawke's Bay, Taranaki and Wairarapa.

The Wellington team had three wins and one close loss.

The team had a mix of experience and youth. The majority of the team play in the Youth grade competition on Saturday’s but the team also blooded Amelia Kerr, Kate Fenton, Annaleisha Wood, Olivia Macrae and Briana Perry who play morning junior cricket. The experience gained will be invaluable for the years ahead as these young players all showed the talent coming through. All bowled consistent line and length. Batting technique by all four was good.

Courtney Sprott, unavailable for the National Year 10 tournament in Wanganui to be held in January, captained the team. Courtney had an excellent all round tournament scoring 90 runs, taking 9 wickets and is a natural leader who had a positive influence on team on and off the field.

Year 10 Gemma Edgecombe, Year 9’s, Chantelle Murrell, Izzy Laurenson, Jess Kerr, Nicola Adams and Sophie Telfer all playing in their first rep tournament, each showed their all round skills playing against some very strong opponents. Each player developed nicely as they all showed form with bat, ball and in the field with some fine catches taken by all and about six run outs.

All three wicket keepers, Amelia and Jess Kerr and Annaleisha Wood, gloved the ball well with few extras. Jess Kerr took three outstanding catches in the field.

A highlight of the tournament was two unbeaten partnerships of 84 and 70 between Courtney Sprott and Amelia Kerr that chased down the totals of Taranaki and Wairarapa respectively on the Wednesday. The positive intent and batting technique shown in these two partnerships was superb and the team can take many learnings.

Thank you to Debbie Sprott (Manager), Leigh Perry (Chief/Scorer), Robbie Kerr and Jeremy Sprott (coaches) and Richard Laurenson (Scorer) for all their efforts prior and during the tournament. Thank you to parents who assisted with transport.
